Energy Security and Environmental Sustainability are NOT mutually-exclusive conflicting objectives.
We do NOT have to pick one OR the other. The clean energy technology that solves one can also help solve the other serious problem, in a synergistic (1 + 1 = 3) way.
Controversial “biofuels from food crops” was NOT part of his proposed problem solution.
The Bush goal is 20% of U.S. Energy from Wind & Solar. You may not know it, but as the Governor of Texas in 1996, George W. Bush created the Texas Wind Energy Initiative, and now Texas is the largest producer of wind energy in the U.S. Bush’s Texas home is much more efficient, with much lower greenhouse gas emissions, than Al Gore’s. What we SAY is important, but what we DO goes a whole lot further toward Global Warming Solutions.
Our current man-made climate change problems must be solved by billions of individuals acting in concert. Our clean energy issue is NOT technology. It is EDUCATION about what was proven to work well log ago. America is currently the world’s worst energy glutton, and the largest source of Global Warming greenhouse gas emissions. We MUST reverse this trend, and become an example of many specific Global Warming Solutions. As President, George W. Bush created the Solar America Initiative, which has a goal of photovoltaic rooftop electricity for $.05 to $.10 per kWh by 2015 (when fossil fuel electricity is likely to approach $.30 per kWH). This will cause a dramatic reduction in the need for new dirty energy plants. The marketplace should soon DEMAND Zero Energy Design. The value of houses with conventional energy bills will eventually plummet (or Zero Energy Design concepts will have to be retrofitted to them). It costs much less to integrate Zero Energy Design into a new building, than to add it as an afterthought later. (Kind of like converting a gasoline automobile to run on electricity – smile).

On 9/28/07, George Bush stated: “global temperatures are rising and that this is caused largely by human activities. When we burn fossil fuels, we release greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, and the concentration of greenhouse gases has increased substantially.” We must “be responsible stewards of the Earth the Almighty trusted to our care.”
When obsolete anachronistic political liars like Rush Limbaugh & Senator Jim Inhofe continue to preach that “Global Warming is a Democrat Hoax”, and “compact fluorescent light bulbs suck” they are In Direct Conflict With Our Conservative President. Repeating their Virulent Ignorance that there is no Global Warming, or that humans are not causing it, is continuing to create strong political resistance to the changes we all MUST make to “lead the world to produce fewer greenhouse gases.”

Urban Heat Islands – It’s Not JUST Greenhouse Gases
Industrialized cities generate a lot of wasted heat. 86% of energy burned by vehicles is useless heat. 90% of incandescent light energy generates useless heat, which we must then use air conditioning to remove in the summer. Refrigerators heat up the kitchen in the summer. Clothes dryers suck conditioned air outside, and draw unconditioned dirty air inside – increasing energy consumption. Air conditioners and industry heat up the outdoors in the summer. Parking lots and buildings become solar-heated huge thermal mass in the summer.
Most cities are uncomfortably 6 degrees to 12 degrees F warmer in the summer than nearby green areas, especially forests with life-giving trees. Cities are called “Urban Heat Islands.”
Green belts and green roofs can help a little bit, but they are not nearly enough. Urban heat islands combine with greenhouse gases to increase the temperature of the entire earth.
